During World War II, a Polish-Jewish refugee couple, Simon and Hanna Lifschutz, settled in Bombay and founded Studio Vitrum (later Hexamar) in Kemps Corner. They introduced Mumbai artists to glass mosaics and hand-painted ceramics, offering affordable art objects like tiles, trays, and lamps, blending design and craft in everyday life. The studio also hosted prominent artists like Badri Narayan, K. H. Ara, K. K. Hebbar, and A. A. Raiba, and contributed to decorative murals across the city. Over time, as the founders moved away and interest waned, Studio Vitrum faded into obscurity—but the current “A Glazed History” exhibition at JNAF is reviving its legacy and reminding Mumbai of this bold chapter in its visual culture.
